Business of the Month: Shamna Foods

From Waste to Wealth, Shamna Foods Uses the Waste of Vegetables to Create Optimum Nutrition

Did you know that food industry waste is estimated at twenty to thirty percent? Ever wonder what happens to all the pomace, the dry residue that comes out of vegetables? Food waste may be getting a bad reputation for no reason, and Shamna foods have found the solution.

Shamna foods have products that see the wealth in the waste and they have turned the otherwise wasteful parts of the vegetables into a powerhouse of nutrition. For example, they have a cold-pressed dietary supplement high in lycopene made of tomato leftovers and a high protein, all-natural chocolate hazelnut spread made from vegetable pomace.

The Background

Yaki Harel, the CEO and Co-founder of Shamna Foods, was the CEO of a food company in Israel for seven years, growing it from founding to acquisition. He knew the industry’s challenges and decided to team up with Rahamim Eliyahu, the CTO, to produce cold-pressed products. They discovered that you could create an amazingly nutritious and tasty product from what would otherwise be thrown away.  Shamna Foods’  new line of cold-pressed herbs preserves and locks in the ingredients’ taste and aroma while maintaining their potent nutritional properties. The line is full of high-quality sustainable and functional oils from turmeric to cumin to oregano or coriander seeds.

CEO Yaki Harel explains, “We must use our limited resources more thoughtfully and more responsibly. There is so much to do with the food industry residues; it should be our most urgent task. “

Shamna Foods teaches an important lesson about food culture, one person’s waste is another person’s wealth!  You can find out more about Shamna here.
